Applications of Battery Separator Air Permeability Tester

The air permeability testing of battery separators is conducted by applying air pressure to one side of the fixed separator and measuring the air pressure drop and the elapsed time. This procedure serves to assess the separator’s air permeability performance.

Typically, the air permeability testing method adheres to the volumetric method principle. Under a specific pressure differential, the time required for a fixed volume of gas (e.g., 100 milliliters) to traverse a sample of known area and thickness is recorded. From this time, the material’s air permeability parameter can be computed. In the case of lithium – battery separator materials testing, generally, within a controlled temperature, humidity, and normal – pressure test environment, when the testing instrument applies a pressure of 1.21 kPa, the time for 100 mL of air to pass through a separator with an area of 6.45 cm² is measured. A shorter pressure – drop time indicates better air permeability.

Furthermore, multiple testing methods exist for battery separator air permeability, such as the Gurley method, the Bendtsen method, and the Schopper method. Although these methods vary slightly in principle, they all evaluate air permeability performance by measuring the time or air flow rate of gas passing through the separator. To satisfy the requirements of different testing methods, there are air permeability testers available on the market that integrate the Gurley method, the Bendtsen method, and the Schopper method.

Battery separator air permeability testers possess diverse functions, including air permeability performance testing, adjustable test parameters, data recording and analysis, and automated operation. These functions enable the tester to evaluate the separator’s air permeability performance more precisely, while enhancing testing efficiency and data – processing convenience.

Battery Separator Air Permeability Tester

The Gurley air permeability tester represents a standard testing method for the porosity, air permeability, and air resistance of various materials. It finds application in quality control and research and development within the production of paper, textiles, non – woven fabrics, plastic films, etc.

DRK463 Wang Yan method air permeability tester: When air under a specific pressure passes through an air nozzle and penetrates the test specimen, the test specimen’s impedance to air penetration determines the air pressure between the air nozzle and the test specimen. This air pressure value is measured, and based on this measurement, the air permeability value equivalent to the isolation seconds is theoretically calculated.
